This paper develops the skills of facilitating conflict resolution using mediation, conferencing and other types of restorative and generative conversations in families, schools and other contexts. A narrative perspective on conflict resolution features strongly in the paper.

How this paper will be taught

The paper is taught using Moodle and an on­-campus block course. Teaching will be offered through a block course in Kirikiriroa Hamilton, and through required participation online in Moodle. Regular discussions are scheduled and students can select from asynchronous online written discussions or syncronous Zoom discussions. Students must be available for each week of this paper, both on Moodle and on campus. See the timetable below for paper and block course dates.

  • Apply the concepts of discourse, positioning, externalising conversations to the task of conceptualising the processes of mediation

  • Closely analyse and reflect upon their own communication and relational practices in mediation situations - with particular attention to their intentionality and use of language

  • Demonstrate an understanding of the specific issues at work in dispute resolution contexts, familiarity with a range of approaches to dispute resolution, and make connection between these and their own practice contexts
    Linked to the following assessments:
  • have developed and practised to a level of competence the skills of mediation/restorative practice and begun to develop a narrative approach to this area of professional practice
